Playing cards is one of the Middle East’s favorite pastimes. Often you can walk past a café late in the evening in Amman, Tunis, or Beirut and see every table taken, men hunched over their hands of cards, surrounded by dozens of empty teacups. The games are played for pleasure, but the stakes feel high nonetheless. Middle East Archive has produced its own deck of cards to celebrate the tradition across MENA, featuring photography by Olgaç Bozalp. Photos taken of scenes across the region, capturing people and places in their true forms accompany a deck of cards to make you feel like you’re in the café, tea at hand, playing an intense game of tarneeb.
